Tacoma Museum of Glass, Tacoma Washington

Arthur Erickson, Nick Milkovich Architects, and Thomas Cook Reed Reinvald designed the Museum of Glass in Tacoma Washington, which showcases glass artwork predominantly by Dale Chihuly.

The industrial warehouses in this marina district give way to construct of glass and raw building materials. The $63 million project was completed in 2002, and covers 75,000 ft2. Redevelopment plans are still be mulled for the 1902 brick structure nearby. A striking new bridge leads to the museum.

Diagonal bracing rises 90 ft in the form of a tilted cone. A pair of green structures called "Crystal Gate" rise at one entrance. The "Seaform Pavilion" roof at the entrance lets the sunlight stream through fascinating colored glass forms. The museum is an interesting insertion of glass in a gritty worn-out city space which has sparked urban renewal.
