R&L Architects designed the Mbombela Stadium near Nelspruit in Mpumalanga South Africa, completed in 2009. It hosted some games for the 2010 World Cup.
Inspiration for the 40,929-seat stadium's structure came from local nature, with craned roof supports in the shape of giraffes and seats painted in zebra stripe patterns. Three tiers of seats are spread in a bowl arrangement, and a large cantilevered roof covers 94% of the seats.
Corruption and murder surrounding the $140 million project, as well as irreplaceable damage to wetlands, left a damper on the mood leading up to Africa's 2010 FIFA World Cup.
