MIT Media Lab, Cambridge Massachusetts

Fumihiko Maki designed the Media Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Planning, completed in 2009. The $90m project ran behind schedule. The original Wiesner Building was designed by I.M.Pei.

Stairways criss-cross the open lobby space, with bright colors to indicate circulation, using Pei's original color scheme. Large exterior facades bring light into the clean white interiors, with elements slipping in de Stijl fashion. Careful composition of materials establishes unique lighting atmospheres in each space, with open connections allowing free collaboration.

A wood terrace at the roof offers spectacular views of the city and river. Aluminum rods on exterior shading devices lessens the glare and brings comfort to the 163,000 ft2 and 6 story building. Yuliya Bentcheva painted the steps in front of the building to give the illusion of water pouring down.
