Kaohsiung World Games Stadium, Kaohsiung Taiwan

Toyo Ito designed the Kaohsiung National Stadium for the 2009 World Games in Taiwan. It is the largest stadium in the country at a 55,000 seat capacity.

The spiral shape and steel grating exterior recalls a winding dragon. Around 8,844 solar panels on the exterior generate much of the power needed. The bending nature of the form is repeated in concrete sculptural forms at the stadium's edge and inside the interior pathways. Lush parks surround the stadium and intrude on the intricate structure.

This stunning project was unfortunately overshadowed by China's gaudy Birds Nest stadium. It isn't as large but much more impressive and architectural profound.
