Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, Milan Italy

Giuseppe Mengoni designed the Vittorio Emanuele II Galleria in Milano, Italy, completed in 1877. Two glass arcades intersect in a crucifix form, with a spectacular glazed dome at the intersection. The galleria stretches 640 feet from The Duomo to the Teatro Alla Scala opera.

The glass and cast iron roof is similar to the Burlington Aracde, covering the width of a full Milan street. The 164 foot octagonal dome is a popular plaza space. Modern lighting techniques illuminate the rich facades at night. The ground and wall mosaics recall ancient Rome, along with the triumphal arch at the entrance.
