Palacio de Congresos Kursaal, San Sebastián Spain

Rafael Moneo designed the Kursaal Convention Center and Auditorium in Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain. The two cubes include a 1,800-seat auditorium, 600-person chamber hall and other exhibition halls. The "stranded rock" is deformed geometry in the context of Mounts Urgull and Ulía. Controversial at its opening in 1999, the project has become more accepted by local inhabitants.

The angular forms arise from a prominent location on the dock. A translucent skin over a simple steel frame glows in programmable colors at night. These double glass facades give way to a cedar wood interior and gold leaf ceilings. The glass runs in horizontal curved troughs with aluminum moldings. The joints appear complex, but they are mitered to give a simple appearance. Only a few square windows poke through at entrances. The form in minimalist yet the details give it a unique complexity.
