Rookery Building, Chicago Illinois

John Wellborn Root and Daniel Burnham designed the Rookery Building in Chicago Illinois, completed in 1888. Young Frank Lloyd Wright contributed to the project.

The innovative design gave rise to the skyscraper, a 12 story building with metal framing, elevators and large windows. The entrance's central light court displays the focus of the design: bringing light and elegance to the office spaces. Metal tracery and stone ornamentation fill the interiors and exterior. The structure combines exterior load-bearing walls and metal frame.
