Kirchner Museum, Davos Switzerland

Gigon Guyer Architekten designed the Kirchner Museum Davos Schweiz, which is dedicated to the artwork of German expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. It was completed in 1992.

The boxy grid design is typical of European modernism, but Gigon Guyer introduces a clear glass cladding that blends into the snowy mountains. A light plenum extends above the skylit ceiling, with mechanical controls automatically contracting light that is too bright. Artificial lighting comes from the same plenum source.

Interior walls of heavy concrete contrasts the light material, with interior hallways opening to four exhibit spaces in the grid. Wood flooring gives a warm feeling to the interiors.

Kirchner is known for starting the expressionist group Die Brücke along with architecture student friends, free from traditional constraints and conventional thinking. This structure provides a very minimal glass box on which to start.
