Zaha Hadid designed the Phæno Centre in Wolfsburg, completed in 2005. An odd-shaped building rises above the urban field, with a course of roads winding around sleek concrete cones, with squares of light above. A red blob signals the destination- a bar. Immediately it speaks of the speed of an automobile, but in an unexpected way.
Located next to Volkswagon and Autostadt, the heart of Germany's prestigious automobile industry, and sitting right on the high-speed ICE rail line, this museum of science deals with shifts in conceptual spaces. It uses light as a digital momentum. Dots of windows are sometimes sparse and sometimes bunched together. Waves of glazing are similar to the wavy structure of the floor inside.
It is a complex and unexpected environmental for learning, a place designed to awaken an excitement for invention in the visitor. It is also an innovative use of self-compacting concrete.
