Prambanan Temple, Yogyakarta Java Indonesia

Prambanan was built in the 9th century in the Java religion of Indonesia. It is one of the largest Hindu temples in the world. The Sanjaya king of the Mataram Kingdom built the first temples in 850 A.D. and the entire complex was abandoned in 930 A.D. The central pyramid rises 47m tall.

According to legend, Princess Loro Jonggrang agreed to marry Prince Bandung Bondowoso only if he built a thousand temples in one night, because he had killed her father. Bondowoso would have completed the task, but the princess burned one of the temples. In retaliation, Bondowoso had her put to death.

The temples are dedicated to Trimurti, the God of Creation (Brahma), the Sustainer (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva).
