REHAB, Basel Switzerland
Herzog & de Meuron designed the REHAB, Center for Spinal Cord and Brain Injuries in Basel, Switzerland. The structure reinforces therapeutic methods that have been lost in modern hospitals by engaing nature, sunlight, and natural building materials. The traditional-looking planes allow sunlight and fresh air to penetrate into the rooms. The simple rectilinear design makes wayfinding very simple, so that a person is always cognizant of his location and surrounding space.
These simple solutions have been practiced since the Sunburst sanatorium was built in 1928, but what really sets this rehab apart is the materials. Larch, ironwood, pine, and oak reach out of the grassy gardens. The 92 beds are comfortably fit within a natural setting full of foresty fragrance, views, and sounds.
This emphasis on natural forms is so carefully detailed that light fixtures are fit into the cylindrical wood poles.
