E. Fay Jones designed the Thorncrown Chapel near Eureka Springs, Arkansas, completed n 1980. Sainte Chappelle in Paris gave inspiration for the sacred building, with its light-filled walls and gold-traced bony structure. Simple 2x wood members went into this structure, gathered from indigenous Ozark forests. The structural method of holding up the roof is simply repeated in a straight line. It ias 24ft wide and 60ft long, yet rises 48ft. Over 6,000ft2 of glass fits into 425 windows and meets cleanly at the stone foundation. The criss-crossing structural solution conveniently illustrates the Christian symbol of the cross.
Rather than using illusionary stained glass, the surrounding greenery decorates the walls with visions of nature and the wonders of God. The structure is revolutionary, and the use of transparency to establish a self-effacing model of the universe is incredibly powerful. The fragility of nature, complexity from simple repetition, procession, multi-layered symbolism, and modern realism dramatically come together.
