Pfaffenholz Sport Centre, St. Louis Basel Switzerland
Herzog De Meueron designed the Paffenholze Sports complex near Basil Switzerland, completed in 1993. The site lies right on the border with France, and actually lies technically in France. It is reached by passing the Rehab for Spinal Cord and Brain Injuries, also by Herzog De Meueron.
The building uses a very simple form with a complex and natural-looking texture. A sea-sponge layer with some kind of translucency is attached to a straw-like layer. The diagonal structural members and the black voluminous block look clean and modern. The building delves underground, and much of the activities, including a swimming pool, are accessed underground. The design achieves the difficult task of opening up great spaces inside a heavy and oppressive structure. It is interesting to consider how different textures establish a hierarchy of spaces and moods.
