Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane Australia

Sydney architecture firm Architectus designed the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane, Australia. Completed in 2006, the is divided into geographic regions of the world, with a total 25,000 m² floor area.

The post-modernist mix of elements reflects the hectic urban fabric of the area and the nearby river. Two intersecting axial streets create a circulation hub to give a point of orientation. Certain references to aboriginal art can be seen in the design, with a holistic idea of a pavilion in the landscape. The spaces are adaptive, and the riverside area is lightweight and open. Boxes are placed freely inside the grand plan to provide 15 gallery spaces.
