On the edge of the Alps in Weilheim-Schongau, the rococo church Wieskirche sits isolated in the fairy-tale setting. It is known as the "Flower in the Meadow." Designed by Dominikus Zimmermann, built in 1754, the Wallfahrtskirche zum Gegeißelten Heiland auf der Wies was built to house a miraculous statue of Christ that supposedly healed pilgrims.

Joy and colorful light emanate from the chapel with the statue into the oval church, a dynamic design based on the primitive round temple. Statues, vibrant paintings, and architectural forms are incredibly intermixed to create an ethereal, illusionary space.

The white form stands as a beacon on the hill. Inside, columns and slim pure white windows gesture the eye upwards, where it meets a blazing universe of theology and gilded gold. One must experience the mountains of Bavaria, the people, and skillful rendering of art in this historic project to truly appreciate the communicative possibilities of architecture.

Zimmerman stayed with his creation, building a house next door and living there until his death.
