Hirshhorn Museum, Smithsonian Washington DC
Gordon Bunshaft designed the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, part of the Smithsonian Institution at the National Mall of Washington D.C., next to the Reynolds Center. The museum for Joseph Hirshhorn's collection of early 20th century American modernism and sculpture was completed in 1969.
The circular concrete structure is raised above the pedestrian way to establish an urban park with a fountain in the center. Glazing faces the center with just one swath of windows emanating from the bunker toward the city skyline.
