Belém Cultural Center, Lisbon Portugal

Vittorio Gregotti and Manuel Salgado designed the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) in Lisbon, to host Portugal's presidency of the European Union in 1992. Daciano Costa planned the interior. It won the 1993 International Stone Architecture Award.

The 100,000 m² project includes exhibition space, opera, batllet, concert halls, congresses and meeting halls. It sits on the eastern side of the Empire Square and hosted the city's Design Museum. The cubic masonry and stark contrast of solid versus glazing is similar to Salt Lake's Conference Center, and like the Conference Center it sits in contrast to a nearby religious edifice, Jerónimos Monastery. The wide scope of functions left the design minimal and full of connections to nearby venues.
