The Sage Gateshead, Quays UK

Foster and Partners, Buro Happold, Mott MacDonald and Arup designed the Sage Gateshead on the River Tyne in Quays, England. It was completed in 2004 at a cost of £70 million.

The blobby curvatured building provides musical education, performance and conferences for the region. Each blob contains an assembly hall: a 1,700-seat performance hall, a 400-seater and a smaller performance room. Circulation space around each room allows acoustic insulation. The glass and steel exterior acts as a membrane around three separate structures. Acoustic panels may be raised and lowered to change the properties of the spaces.
