Cook+Fox Architects designed the Bank of America Tower in New York, completed in 2006. It rises 1,200 ft or 55 floors, with a 78m spire at the top. It has 200,000m2 of office space. All-window exteriors maximize natural lighting with an automatic dimming light system. Captured rainwater is reused, and construction materials are recycled. Urinals are waterless. This is the first skyscraper to earn LEED Platinum for its green technologies.
The environmental features, including wind turbines and a 5mw gas generator, came at a price: total of $1 Billion. It claimed to generate up to 40% of its energy needs with the clean-burning system. Interior air is exceptionally clean, 95% filtered. Designers cited the New York Crystal Palace of 1853 as an inspiration for the glass and steel form.
